Match Recap: Hornets 55 Rowdies 10, 10/11/2014.
The Rowdies traveled across the river to take on the Hornets at Forest Park. The Hornets were looking to build on recent success and looking for their third win in a row. The Hornets immediately began stringing together good phases of play, and after just 8 minutes Brad Kasper snuck over for the first try after improvising a move that was impeded by the referee. The Hornets showed improved aggression and technique in their scrums and after wheeling a Rowdies put in, they forced a turnover and from the ball spread out wide, Miles cut back inside and crashed over after 14 minutes. Another successful Brad Bearden conversion put the Hornets up 14-0. With confidence and momentum building, the Hornets were able to successfully execute several new scrum and lineout moves to put their good practice into play. After 28 minutes, Dan Goodrich fielded a Rowdies clearing kick and out-paced the cover defense for a 50 meter try down the left sideline. The touchline conversion attempt sailed wide, leaving the halftime score at 19-0 in favor of the Hornets. The second half saw the Rowdies short on numbers and tiring, and the Hornets started pouring it on. After just 4 minutes of the second half, a turnover and quick hands led to Dan scoring again. After 48 minutes, the Rowdies tried to clear from inside their 22 but the kick was charged down and Damien “the Mexicutioner” Gonzales scooped up the ball and acrobatically placed down in the corner as he was falling out of bounds. After that the floodgates opened with tries to Bearden, Kasper, Rich Favazza and Ryan SUDA!!!!! The Rowdies crossed for two consolation tries late in the game to make the final score 55-10 to the Hornets. This makes it three wins in a row, and brings the season record to 3-2. Although it was a convincing win on the scoreline, plenty of dropped ball and missed opportunities could have made it a lot worse for the Rowdies. The win keeps building momentum for the Hornets season, but I think everyone would agree we can still improve on this performance. Man of the match was a well-deserved Joey Smelt.
