Hornets-13, Franklin-17Recap
The second game of the season was everything it was built up to be against Div III rivals, Franklin County Crimsons. After a disappointing showing in the final game of the fall season the Hornets were looking for redemption. From the kick off the Hornets asserted their aggressive play on the Crimson and were able to move the ball down the field. The Crimson defense was able to hold the drive to only a penalty kick by rookie Zach Hatraf. The ball began to settle with both forward pack as was anticipated. Hard running and hitting were the norm for the remainder of the first half. Hard running eventually paid off for outside center Miles Criss, who scored the only Hornets try of the day. Followed by a great conversion by Zach Hatraf. As a result the rough first half Fly-half Matt Merick was out the second with a shoulder injury. The next forty minutes were the same hard running and hitting as the first, but this half the Hornets had lost a little focus as were penalized with multiple high tackles and off sides, which push the Black & Gold back deep in their own end. The Crimson defense was able to keep the Hornets to only a penalty kick by Zach Hatraf in the second half. The Hornet were at the 22 driving in final minute in a final attempt to overcome the deficit but to no avail. Taking another difficult defeat from Franklin County 17-13. There was some positives to take away from this difficult loss…A hard fought 80 match and everyone can hold there head high, the rookies know what it is like to compete against a high caliber DIII team, and most importantly we know what to work on when we meet them again in two week for the DIII playoffs.
A great turnout for the third half at Humphrey’s were we never seem to lose. It was great to socialize some old Boys, Chuck Squires, Tom Kraus, Chris Trotter, Chris Mosfitt, Chris Klaverkamp. A good time was had by all!
