Hornets-53, Crusaders-0Recap
The Hornets started the 2012 spring season with a cup match against first time rivals, The St. Louis Crusaders. The boys in Black & Gold controlled the tempo from the first kick-off. There were several people in new positions in the pack this game, including a new #8, Paddy Dalton. Welcome to the Forwards! Several rookies made their debut in the pack, including tight head prop Andy, and second row, Christian. The pack was able to wins several opposing line outs and control the scrum throughout the game. This allowed Billy Biggs to score his first try of the spring season! The forwards eventually provide the strong back line with clean ball and the Hornets Back line distributed the ball well. Congrats to Kasper, PT, Ike, & Tommy scoring one try each! Rookie/Veteran Matt Merrick scored two tries while doing a great job commanding the team on the pitch. Despite a strong wind on Saturday, sure footed veteran Juice provide 4 excellent conversions. And we can’t forget about the Damian “Wooly” Gonzales Pain Train and Big Ed Express with some very strong runs (that made Juice go “woooooo!”). A solid performance was also put out by rookie Nails in his first time on the pitch, along with wing Brandon who brought his solid tackling and wheels to the game once again. A special shout out goes to Zach Hatraf, who after several attempts in the fall finally lost his Try virginity and scored his first try as a Hornet, along with a few conversions of his own. Not happy with just one, he scored again for good measure, adding to the final 53-0 Hornets win!!
More rookies and veterans got playing time in a 3rd half of 10’s played by both squads. Good times had by all.
