Hornets-29, SMRFC-12Recap
Sloppy Seconds…Leads to Big Smile
For the second week in a row, the Hornets waded through a sloppy pitch but obtained a win, 29-12 over the Sunday Morning Rugby Club.
As usual the match was hard fought as there is no love lost between these two clubs on the pitch. SMRFC pressured early, driving the Hornets back into their own 22 within the opening minutes and crossing the try line for an early score.
However, the Hornets quickly gained their composure and marched down the field for a try, as Jason Gorenstein (1) drove through Sunday Morning’s forwards for the first try of the day.
Late in the half, Kevin Saak (12) was handed the ball on the 22 and shook off tackle after tackle for the second try of the game. Although sloppy, the forwards did a nice job of producing ball for the back line. The backs, in turn, rewarded the forwards with consistent movement of the ball up and down the pitch, led by Kevin Saak, who dominated the gain line all afternoon. Although dominating the game at half, the Hornets only had a 7 point lead to show for it.
This was quickly extended by the exuberant, Sam Faszholz (15), who entered as a half time replacement at full back. He immediately inserted himself into the back line helping us move the ball up the field. Following a penalty within the 5 meter, the opponents let down their guard for a second assuming the Hornets would take the penalty points, when Faszholz took the ball on a tap and go and dove over the try line for a score.
With the game under control, the Hornets proceeded to score two more times. First, by Jeremy “Flowbee” Vanacek (7), followed by Brian “Florida State” Carey (11) who delivered a viscous stiff-arm to the opponent as he walked in the try from an off-load pass from Kevin Saak.
Of particular note, the defense held strong and tackling was solid, as SMRFC was unable to break off any significant runs.
Additionally, the Hornets continued to show their toughness through their play. Caleb Tufts (6), Flowbee (7) and Pat Dalton (10) are all battling injuries, Jim Crouch (3) played on no sleep during his “lunch break” and Nigel Goodall (8), Chris Fadler (4) and Aaron Lamper (9) covered the pitch making tackle after tackleā¦. And of course, PA Tom (5) made sure no one put their hands on the ball in the rucks!
