Hornets Kick Off Season with Win…Enjoy Beautiful Day of Rugby
After two weeks of scrimmages and 8 weeks of practice in the snow and rain, the Hornets were provided with a beautiful Saturday afternoon to kick off the Cup Season. With a huge group of spectators - Thanks to the Bombers Old Boy Weekend - and plenty of sun, the Hornets were able to get off to a fast start against Sunday Morning Rugby Club.
Wily veteran Caleb Tufts (6) started things off with a number to hard-fought runs, despite a badly injured ankle, ultimately resulting in the Club’s first try of the Spring season. Later in the half both Nigel Goodall (8) and Hornets Captain Jim Crouch (1) were able to capitalize off of long runs from the back-line and punch in scores. To end the half, in one of the best executed plays of the season, Scrum Half, Aaron “PT” Lamper (9) kept the ball off a scrum on the near sideline. As PT scampered down field, Brandon “Juice” Voges (10) provided support and at the 22 ran a perfect switch off of PT, opening a lane for Juice to sprint into the try zone.
Although, the Hornets were taking control with the score, the SMRC pack, especially the big front 3, were equal to the task and really battled the piggies all day. SMRC was able to keep the ball in the Hornets half much of the second half and numerous ill-advised penalties allowed the opponents to gain two scores in the second half. The Hornets were able to seal the victory with a second score by Juice. The backline provided significant pressure on SMRC creating a turnover in their half. In open play, Juice put perfect touch on a pop kick over the defense and in a pile in the try zone, came up with the ball and was awarded a try.
