Hornets-20, SMRFC-5Recap
Hornets defeat SMRFC in Sunday morning friendly…..Rookies show up to play
The Hornets opened up the Spring 2009 season with a chilly friendly against the SMRFC at Forest Park. Both the Hornets and SMRFC completed strong recruiting off seasons and scheduled 4 20-minute halves (broke into 2 games) to provide the rookies with plenty of game time.
Despite the weather, Hornets Old Boys and fans were out in great numbers cheering from the sidelines.
The Hornets sent out 13 veterans and two rookies to face SMRFC’s first 15 (Congratulations to Brian Saak and Chris Fadler for getting the starting call). The Hornets came out attacking and at the 5 minute mark Nigel Goodall (8) took the ball off a scrum for a 20 meter run almost scoring a try but was brought down just short of the Try line. A few rucks later Aaron “PT” Lamper (9) dove into the try zone with the first score of the season. Around the field you could tell both teams were still knocking the cob webs out from the Off season, Penalties and Knock-ons were the food for the next 10 minutes.
SMRFC were given a chance on our 10 meter and did an excellent job of scoring with their heavy pack working well rolling off each other and driving the ball in for a try. 5-5
Later in the First Half Rich Favazza (2) made a great run after cherry picking the ball off SMRFC’s players and took the ball 30 meters to put the Hornets up 10-5.
In the Second Half, The Hornets distanced themselves from SMRFC with two quick scores. Nick Kalist (12) took an off load from “Pennsylvania” Tom Potteiger for a 5 meter try. Minutes later, Nick took a switch off Brandon “Juice” Voges (10) and broke a couple of tackle attempts to run 30 meters and score a second try and put the Hornets up 22 - 5.
Game One Final: Hornets 22, SMRFC 5
The Second Game provided plenty of opportunity for the rookies on both sides to get their feet wet. The play was spirited, headlined by aggressive play by rookies Tommy Bach and Chris Fadler, as well as a few exciting runs from the wiley veteran, Caleb Tufts. The rookies played a very physical game and were making great tackles around the pitch. The Hornets were driving from SMRFC’s 20 meter line, Phase after phase and New 2nd row Chris Fadler powered his way in for the only points of the 2nd game. Great platform to start the season.
Game Two Final: Hornets 7, SMRFC 0
Finally, special recognition should go out to Jim Crouch as we kick off the 2009 season for all of his hard work and dedication. I think we all can be excited about the future of the Hornets. Great Job Jim!
