Recap

Rookies Dominate the Day as Hornets Prepare for Cup Season

The Hornets took the field against the Saint Louis University Billikens on Saturday for their last exhibition match before opening up Cup play.

The Bills were young, fast and fit and played hard all afternoon. . . .never giving up on a play. However, the Hornets size and experience proved too much for the Bills and resulted in a 31-14 Hornets victory.

Early scores by the Saak brothers, immediately demonstrated the Hornets had arrived to play.  Kevin Saak (13) scored the first try of his career on a hard 20 meter.  Moments later, The Saak Attack struck again when Kevin Saak took the ball another hard fought 20 meters and off-loaded to a bursting Brian Saak (15) for a score.  The Saak boys proved they are going to be a force to reckon with for a long time (as long as there are no scheduled washer tournaments).

Hornet Rookies stepped up all day long logging a lot a game time.  With limited or no experience, Tom Ravensburg (3), Alex Wood (14), Justin Bender (6) and Rookie Kelly (11) all came out hitting hard and hustling around the field, highlighted by a few big time hits by Alex Wood,  who would later be recognized as Man of the Match for his inspired play.

In the second half, a few Old Timers decided they still had some gas in the tank.  Jeremy FLOWBEE Vanacek (8) ran a beautiful open field ball off of Paddy Dalton (10) for a score.  Later, Lance Lecomb (2) showed his veteran savvy by picking up a loose ball on the try line and diving in for a score (That is what we call a Stat Stuffer!).

Because of the beautiful weather and great play, a third half was agreed upon.  Both sides continued to play hard.  With the Hornets knocking on the try line once again, wing Brad Kasper (14) took a crash off of new scrum half Torrey Marbury (9).  Kasper found a supporting Lance Crowell (7), who charged into the try zone for the final score of the day.
