Hornets-9, Royals-17Recap
The Hornets squared off against the Royals in two matches on Saturday afternoon. The sky was blue was but so was the mood of the Hornets after falling 17 -9 and 10-5, respectively in the two matches.
The Hornets dominated the first half spending the majority of the half in the Royals own 22. However the Royals were equal to the task only allowing two penalty kicks and a beautiful drop kick just outside the 22 from the Hornets Captain, Nigel Goodall. The Royals countered with a try to end the first half 9 – 5 Hornets.
The second half told a different story as an inspired Royals team, complimented by sloppy Hornets play, resulted in two tries and 12 points leading to a 17-9 victory by the Royals.
The Second game was a tightly fought contest with plenty of rookie play and an appearance by Hornet great, Matt Fitzgerald. However, the Hornets were unable to overcome early scores by the Royals and fell 10 – 5. On his birthday, Jim Crouch was able to drive past the Try line for the Hornets only score.
Of note, Tyler Sherry played his last game as a Hornet this season. Tyler is headed to Chicago for a year to pursue professional opportunities. We wish Tyler the best of luck in his new endeavors and hope to see him back next season.
Although, the Games did not provide the result the Hornets were looking for, there were more flashes of potential from the rookies and strong play from the veterans which continue to provide hope for a strong season from the Hornets.
Finally, to celebrate a beautiful afternoon of rugby, a huge contingent of Hornets showed up at Humphrey’s, the original Hornet bar, to celebrate the birthdays of Jim Crouch and Jen Fitzgerald, and resulted in a great time for all.
