Sloppy Conditions…Big Win Over Rowdies
The Hornets were not lucky enough to have the sun shining for their second Cup Match of the season, but had plenty of fan support from the United and Bombers sides, and did not disappoint.
The conditions were sloppy but the Hornets were very disciplined with the ball and showed steady hands as they methodically walked the ball down the pitch early in the game. Caleb Tufts (6), who has breathed new life into the team with his inspired play, provided his second try in two weeks after Nick Kalist (13) rumbled to a 25 yard gain and blasted through the Rowdies back line.
Later in the half, Nigel Goodall (8), added his second try of the season with a powerful run up the near sideline through a number of Rowdie would-be tacklers.
The Hornets kept the ball in the Rowdies’ half much of the first 40 minutes and were rewarded one last time when Paddy Dalton (10) placed a perfect cross kick from just inside the half line to the far side line. Nick Kalist (13) challenged on the kick and was able to come down with it against the Rowdies’ wing. From there, it was a race to the corner of the try zone and Kalist just beat the Rowdies star fullback for the score.
With the momentum, the Hornets expected to walk away with a win, but the Rowdies would have none of that and came out and dominated the first 20 of the second half. They played very inspired and were able to get a score on the board early. The Hornets were able to regroup. The play was back and forth with a number of huge hits against the Rowdies causing emotions to flare.
As play settled down, the Hornets were able to create some additional distance when Kevin Saak (12), who has run with the ball terrifically in these first few games of the Hornet’s season, was able to break off a nice run through the Rowdies centers. From there it was great hands, support and team work, that moved the ball from Saak, to Dalton, to Kalist and back to Dalton, who walked in for the try.
