Hornets-10, Ramblers-10Recap
The Hornets took the pitch this Fall against the Ramblers in hopes of avenging a Spring loss. Although only a pre-season exhibition, both teams appeared to have their full squads and the game was close and hard fought from start to finish.
The first half was battle up and down the pitch with both sides making defensive stands when needed. The Hornets, led by veteran “PA Tom” Potteiger were equal to every offensive push the Ramblers made. Paired with a new set of young flanks, Lance Crowell and Brad Bearden, and the wily play of Jason Gorenstein and Jim Crouch, the Hornets forwards led the team throughout the 1st half. Only allowing one try to the opponents in the final minute of the half.
Inspired by their competitive play in the first half, the Hornets came out flying down the field. Playing great phase ball, the Hornets drove down the field with forward and back ball. The backs were led by great runs by Kevin Saak and the incomparable defense of Brandon “Juice” Voges. Finally Nick Kalist broke through with the equalizer on a 15 meter try when Aaron Lamper was able to dig a tough ball out of a Hornet won ruck. The tough play continued throughout the half, but ended in a 5-5 tie. Despite a late half rumble down the field capped by a beautiful pass from PA Tom to Bryan Saak which would have been a score but for a tough call on a forward pass. A wonderful result for the Hornets after last years loss. It also proved that the Hornets are for real this season and should create some momentum moving into Cup play.
Although play was exceptionally chippy, both teams agreed to a third half to reward a number of rookies who have worked so hard at practice this year. Dave Eike and Shawn Turnbull made their first Hornet’s appearances. In addition, Rob Hite, Steve Pfleeger, Danny Graves and others all played giving great effort and making some big hits. Pat Dalton also made a long anticipated return from injury and played with the toughness that has defined his Hornet career. Bryan Saak scored in the third half but was equaled by a Ramblers score. Final score 5-5 for Game Two.
