Hornets Turn Corner at Ruggerfest…..Look Forward to Strong Finish
The Hornets played four games over the weekend at the Annual Gateway Ruggerfest resulting in two wins and two losses. However, to all who have watched this team over the season, it was clearly the strongest showing of the year.
Matched up against a formidable Johnson County team, the Hornets opened up with a loss early Saturday morning 17 - 10. Missed tackles from the backline allowed the Sun Dogs some easy scores early and not for lack of effort, but the Forwards were unable to stick the ball in the Try Zone. Brandon “Juice” Voges (15) was able to capitalize on a penalty by the Sun Dogs for an early 3 points and snuck in a late try and conversion for 7 more, but it was not enough to overcome the competitions strong back line.
The Hornets huddled immediately following the game recognizing their mistakes and addressed what needed to be done to fix the problem. In preparation for their second game against a Celts side, Forwards Captain Nigel Goodall (8) and Head Coach Mick Wilkes designed a strategy to take advantage of our powerful pack and athleticism in the backline.
With Jamie Woods (10) orchestrating the offense, the Hornets were able to pour on some quick points in the first half against the Celts, with beautifully orchestrated back line moves including a Bread & Butter from Jamie Woods to Brandon Voges, an offload from Nick Kalist (12) to Brandon Voges off of a perfectly presented crash ball from Aaron Lamper (9), a second Inside Center crash powered through the Celts back line for a score and finally a pop kick by Woods over the defensive line directly into the hands of Kalist who carried it to the Try line and eventually off loaded to a supporting Jamie Woods for a score. In addition, to the exciting back line play, Jim Childers (2) drove a score in off of great rucking by the forwards. Rookies flooded the field for the second half providing plenty of playing time for all of the Hornets. Also making an appearance was Hornet great Chris Trotter, who despite an ailing knee was “running cats over” all over the pitch. Games final score was 38-7.
The day’s games were done by 3:00 in the afternoon but the Hornets held court at the Pitch enjoying the beautiful weather and ice cold beverages.
Sunday morning came early the next day with a game scheduled against University of Northern Iowa. It was clear the Collegians could not match the Hornets size or strength but made up for it with speed and endurance.
The Hornets dominated the pitch in the first half opening up with a score by rookie Brian Saak (11) when a he picked the ball up clean off the floor from a Nigel Goodall off load. Moments later Jim Childers powered in the second try of the game supported by the forwards.
The strong play rolled over into the second half with scores from Forward’s Captain Nigel Goodall (8) and replacement wing Torrey Marbury (14). The Hornets began to lose some steam toward the end of the game, as the Iowa team valiantly fought back for a few late scores but it was not enough and the Hornets proved victorious 24-14.
Sadly, the day ended for Hornets in the fourth match of the weekend against a strong squad from South Dakota. An explosive South Dakota backline scored two quick tries early and the Hornets could never make up the ground. However, the Hornets battled the entire match, including a late try by Aaron Lamper and conversion kick by Nigel Goodall. To a player, the Hornets admitted that this was one of the hardest hitting teams they had faced.
All in all, it was a great tournament with beautiful weather, strong competition and a great turnout of fans and Old Boys. Although, many players were deserving, Coach Mick Wilkes named Brandon “Juice” Voges as Man of the Tournament.
