SHANE BYRNE MEMORIAL
Sgt. Shane Thomas Byrne, 28, of Rolla, Missouri passed away suddenly in his sleep on January 26 in Villa Ridge, Missouri.
Shane was born in St Louis, Missouri on July 15, 1984 to parents John and Jenny Byrne with an older sister, Shannon. He graduated from Northwest High School in 2002 and went on to join the US Army in 2005. Shane married his wife, Amanda, on July 28, 2006. After being stationed in Germany, in 2007 he was deployed to the Middle East to serve his country for 15 months as a combat medic in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in a roadside blast.
Shane retired from the military in 2011 and began going to school for his degree in Biology. He also became the volunteer coach for the Missouri University of Science and Technology rugby team. Shane became a father on March 28, 2012 when his daughter, Grace, was born. A passionate man, he had many hobbies including hunting, rugby, fishing, golf, and fixing up old trucks. He was also a member of the VFW and dreamed of a profession where he could help other veterans returning from combat. He lived a big life and will be missed always by his loving family and countless friends.
Shane is grieved by his wife, Amanda (Door) Byrne and daughter, Grace Byrne; parents, John and Jenny (Dunnigan) Byrne; sister, Shannon (Byrne) Flanders and her husband, Todd, and son, Jack; and grandmother, Doris Dunnigan. He is also grieved by numerous in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Shane played with the Hornets for several years while he was in high school. He had opportunities to play with several area teams composed of people his own age, but he wanted the challenge of playing against better and stronger players. He did well in that setting. He was a fierce competitor for us in the pack, and I imagine he carried that same spirit through his military career. I also remember how funny he could be and how much I enjoyed his company. He was a fixture at social events, along with his mom Jenny, dad John, and sister Shannon.
He was true Hornet.
